News Release September 14th, 2011

Kim John Payne and The Soul of Discipline
Internationally renowned parenting consultant, author and speaker in Whistler October 1st/ 2nd

Whistler, BC – Parents in Whistler will soon have the opportunity to hear from a highly sought after speaker and educator on parenting and discipline styles. On October 1st, Kim John Payne will give a lecture at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., and on October 2nd he will lead a workshop at the Spruce Grove Fieldhouse from 9:00 a.m – 1 p.m.

Speaker Kim John Payne, M. Ed. has been a counsellor, educator, consultant and researcher for nearly thirty years. He regularly gives presentations at international conferences for educators, parents and therapists around the world, including European, Australian and North American educational associations. Mr. Payne has worked extensively with the North American and UK Waldorf educational movements and Public Schools. He has been featured in Time Magazine, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, several parenting magazines, BBC, NBC, Fox and ABC television, as well as National Public Radio. He is the author of two books, Games Children Play, and Simplicity Parenting, and is currently working a new book: The Soul of Discipline.

In his presentation and workshop he will explore discipline styles from the past and present from the authoritarian “blind obedience” to the “good job” culture. He will outline three cumulative discipline phases: training creative compliance in the young child, building emotional skills for the elementary age, and managing critical choices for the teenager.

He will offer practical strategies for:

• What to do with the “NO” response.
• Eight good reasons to stop saying “good job”.
• If we “manage” our children they will “unionize”. What are the alternatives.
• Alternatives to the over use of “time out”
• “Shall we get in the car” versus “Its time to get in the car”. Breaking the request habit.
• Choices. How many how soon?
• Transitions. “Why is it always so hard?” It doesn’t have to be. Learn how.

Tickets are $10 for the evening presentation on October 1st, and $45 for the 4-hour workshop on October 2nd. Tickets can be purchased online at www.whistlerwaldorf.com, and will also be sold at the door if available. Workshop tickets must be purchased in advance – online.
